The Vancouver Maritime Museum held an opening night reception for their new exhibit, Captain Vancouver Goes to Chile, on January 26, 2017. In addition to VMM regular members, board and staff, the Museum was pleased to welcome a large contingent of representatives from the Chilean Consulate who were equally eager to celebrate Captain Vancouver's adventures in Valparaiso and Santiago, Chile. Representatives from other South American Consuls were also in attendance, including El Salvador, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil and Panama, as well as other countries, including Mexico, Cyprus, the Netherlands and China. The exhibit chronicles Captain Vancouver's journey from the Coast of British Columbia enroute to England via South America where repairs to the vessel turned into a two-month stay in Valparaiso, Chile. The Museum's exhibit outlines the circumstances and provides insight into the unscheduled stop which cemented an enduring friendship and cultural exchange between the two countries.
