The International Sailors' Society Canada (ISSC) invited local industry representatives to a celebration of the International Maritime Organization's Day of the Seafarer in Vancouver this past Friday (June 24, 2016). With over 150 guests in attendance, special recognition was given to four special visitors - seafarers from Pacific Basin's MV Jervis Bay which was in port at Kinder Morgan's Vancouver Wharves Terminal. With the theme for this year's Day of the Seafarer being "At Sea for All," ISSC President John Young (Fairmont Shipping), spoke to attendees about the important role seafarers play in today's global trade economy. Captain Kevin Obermeyer also spoke to describe the 2016 Three Peaks Challenge Fundraiser which saw himself, Yvette Meyers and Yoss Leclerc, participate to raise funds for the ISSC. Peter Bernard announced the recipient of this year's Peter G. Bernard Volunteer Award. Also present, Captain Stephen Brown, President of the Vancouver Mission to Seafarers, and James Lawson, Committee Member for the 2016 Mission's Cycling for Seafarers encouraged guests to participate (details can be found at www.flyingangel.ca).
