Newly modified Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System explained...

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), (known as SIMDUT, Système d'information sur les matières dangereuses utilisées au travail, in French) is Canada's national workplace hazard communication standard.

On February 11, 2015 the Government of Canada modified WHMIS 1988 to incorporate the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) for workplace chemicals. The modified WHMIS is referred to as WHMIS 2015.

Canadian suppliers and employers must be compliant with WHMIS 2015 requirements by December 1, 2018.

Produced in cooperation with the BC Maritime Employers Association, (BCMEA) Maritime Training Services has produced a 17 minute training video (English & French subtitles) that familiarizes maritime workers with the basics of WHMIS 2015, including how to protect yourself and your co-workers from hazardous products.

A two-minute clip from WHMIS 2015 ($250) is available on the MTS website here or via BC Shipping News' video gallery.

Learning topics include:

  • Physical & health hazards, and protective measures to avoid harm
  • Overview of the GHS and how WHMIS aligns
  • Understand hazard groups, classes and labels
  • Summary of the 16 sections of a Safety Data Sheet
